The "beach bod" posts
Updated: Jul 19, 2018
It's that time of year again, my friends. Summer is here and that means, you guessed it, relentless discussion, social media posts, and advertisements about getting a "bikini body", "beach bod", "summer body" and so on.
I cannot open social media or even walk through Target for Pete's sake without hearing or seeing SOMETHING about "working on my/your bikini body".
Here's the deal.
As a culture, we have been socialized to believe there is ONE type of body that is approved to wear a certain style of swimwear... or certain types of clothing in general. The body we see in each and every summer bikini advertisement for the last several decades is some variation of a thin, white, cis-gendered, able-bodied female with blemish free skin, a sun-kissed tan, not a dimple of cellulite in sight, sparkling white teeth, and beautiful long, silky hair.
So every person who does NOT have that body (which let's face it is at least 90% of the human population) has adopted the belief that they therefore do NOT have a "bikini body". That their body is somehow not worthy, according to rigid and ridiculous societal standards, to enjoy the warm sun and cool water in the swimwear of their choosing.
Well, my friends, I'm here to let you know that is
IT'S A BUNCH OF GOSH DARN BALONEY, CAN I GET AN AMEN!?
(Harmful and oppressive baloney at that.)
You see, there are these multi-billion dollar industries known as the diet and beauty industry who stay in business by making sure we believe we are flawed. That we are wrong and unworthy for the looking the way we do. They create and perpetuate these shortcomings to sell us millions of products to fix, improve, and shrink ourselves. These companies create and profit off of deep-rooted insecurities about our bodies and appearance.
Yep, pretty rotten isn't it?
So, here's the deal. It's hard. It's really hard to undo the harm of the relentless body-shaming messages.
But IT IS possible.
It takes patience, practice, and a support system goes alooooooong way (that's what our online community is for!) - but I PROMISE you it IS possible. Hey, you just got a good start by reading this blog.
I'm here to remind you that you DO NOT have to "lose weight first" - because your life is happening NOW. Your body is acceptable, worthy, lovable JUST THE WAY IT IS, TODAY. You do not have to cover up your body if you don't want to. ALL BODIES are allowed to WEAR WHATEVER THE HELL they want to.
If you like it, wear it. Bikinis, crop tops, shorts included.
And if anyone tells you otherwise, give them my number.
